HBO has renewed “House of the Dragon” for a third season, solidifying the popularity of the “Game of Thrones” franchise. The announcement came just days before the highly anticipated premiere of Season 2 on June 16.

“House of the Dragon,” a spinoff of the immensely successful “Game of Thrones” series, was co-created by Ryan Condal and author George R.R. Martin. The series has been a significant success for HBO, boasting the largest premiere audience for an original series on both HBO and Max, and the first season amassed over 29 million viewers per episode across linear and streaming platforms, leading to its renewal for a second season just a week after its initial release.

The show, based on Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” revolves around the history of the Targaryen dynasty in the fictional land of Westeros, occurring nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and approximately 100 years after the Targaryens unified the Seven Kingdoms.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s programming and drama series chief, praised the team behind the series in a statement. “George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season,” Orsi said. “We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into creating a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale only rivalled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.”

House of the Dragon” has also garnered critical acclaim, receiving nine Emmy nominations, including one for outstanding drama series. The show’s success has continued to bolster HBO’s formidable “Game of Thrones” empire, promising fans more epic storytelling and intricate character dynamics in future seasons.
