The Ghanaian football community has been thrown into mourning after a young footballer was shot and killed in an armed attack at his residence on Sunday night. The player, identified as 24-year-old forward Michael Osei, was attacked by unknown gunmen who stormed his home in the Ashanti region shortly after he returned from a league match.
According to police reports, the assailants arrived on motorcycles and forced their way into Osei’s house around 10:30 pm local time. Witnesses say the attackers demanded money and valuables before opening fire. Osei was hit in the chest and abdomen and died on the way to the hospital. His teammate, who was visiting at the time, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment in critical condition.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed that no arrests have been made yet, but investigations are ongoing. “We have launched a full scale manhunt for the suspects. We appeal to anyone with information to come forward,” a police spokesperson said.
Osei played for Asokwa Deportivo in the Ghana Division One League and had recently been scouted by several Premier League clubs. His coach described him as a disciplined and hardworking player with a bright future. “This is a devastating loss. Michael was not just a player; he was a son to all of us. We are shattered,” the coach said in a statement.
The Ghana Football Association has postponed all league matches scheduled for the coming weekend as a mark of respect. The GFA President issued a statement condemning the attack and called on authorities to beef up security for athletes. “No footballer should lose their life in such a senseless manner. We demand justice for Michael and his family,” the statement read.
Fans have gathered at the Asokwa Deportivo stadium to lay flowers and light candles in memory of the fallen star. Tributes have also poured in on social media, with fellow players expressing shock and anger. One player wrote: “You were taken too soon. Rest in power, brother.”
This incident has reignited concerns over the safety of athletes in Ghana, following similar attacks on footballers in recent years. The players’ union has urged the government to provide better protection for sportsmen and women, especially those living in high risk areas.
As the search for the killers continues, the family of Michael Osei has appealed for calm and prayers. His funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
