A fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri students.

The victims were reportedly burnt beyond recognition, with their charred bodies discovered after the flames were extinguished.

Residents near the vicinity say the inferno started late on Tuesday night and raged for about three hours before it was controlled. Sixteen other students sustained injuries in the incident.

A resident, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, attributed the fire to igniting stored sticks, locally called kara, which were kept inside the school building.

According to a source, the fire broke out at Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside the students’ study hall, where about 100 students were housed.

After evacuating the students, they thought none were left inside. It was only after the fire was put out that they found body parts and corpses of the victims burnt beyond recognition,” the source told ChannelsTV.

The 17 deceased students were buried today, following Islamic rites.

Speaking via telephone with DailyTrust, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Muazu Haidara, confirmed the incident, stating that he was on his way to the scene and would provide further details.
