Despite the Nigerian Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh’s, claims of fulfilling all responsibilities towards Nigerian athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Assistant Coaches of the Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have voiced deep disappointment over unfulfilled promises and unpaid compensation.

Abi Olajuwon, daughter of NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon and assistant coach for D’Tigress, exposed the shocking betrayal by Nigerian sports authorities.

The team, which made history as the first African basketball team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals, has allegedly been denied fair compensation for their extraordinary achievement.

To now lie and not pay your coaches for their work and want to keep my money for the three games before the Olympics because I work in the WNBA is sad, Olajuwon wrote.

She also expressed her dismay at the treatment of the assistant coaches, who played a crucial role in the team’s success.

These revelations are in contrast to Senator Enoh’s earlier statements. Speaking earlier, the Sports Minister had expressed disappointment over the country’s performance at the Olympics, stating,

We did everything as a ministry to prepare the athletes adequately and provide them with every financial support, but unfortunately, the performance has not produced any podium finish.

Enoh highlighted the ministry’s efforts, noting that athletes were paid in advance and training facilities were extended beyond what was initially budgeted.

We paid them in advance and fulfilled all our responsibilities as a ministry. We even expanded their training facilities beyond what was initially budgeted, he said.
