Deportation: Dream Of Permanent Residency Shattered For Africans, Others Studying In Canada

Thousands of Africans and other nationalities studying in Canada risk deportation as a result of a series of immigration reforms by the Canadian government.

Many students dream of permanent residency and citizenship after their studies, but their dreams may be shattered due to federal reforms to reduce immigration.

The reforms include a ban on the Post-Graduation Work Permit programme in 2021 and the prevention of a PGWP application at the border.

According to media reports, these reforms have sparked protests by international students in major Canadian provinces, including Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

Professionals are leaving Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and other African countries for Europe and the Americas for greener pastures, causing a brain drain in the continent.

According to the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), the United Kingdom granted visas to 18,224 Nigerian health workers in 2022/2023.

Despite entering European countries legally, Africans constantly face institutionalised racism and threats of deportation.
