A civil society organisation, the Concerned Nigerians Group, has condemned the Department of State Services (DSS) following the reported abduction and brutalisation of the factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Atiku Abubakar Isah.

In a statement signed by the group’s convener, Raphael Adebayo, the organisation accused security agents of targeting Mr Isah due to his alleged refusal to accept a ₦100 million bribe to secure his support for President Bola Tinubu.

According to the statement, Mr Isah was allegedly abducted and violently assaulted by operatives of the DSS, with threats of blackmail levied against him. The group decried the incident as a violation of human rights and called for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of all DSS officers and non-state actors involved.

We declare that under no circumstances should any human being, let alone any citizen of Nigeria, be violated in such a bestial and bloodthirsty manner by security agents of the state without consequences,” the statement read.

The group praised Mr Isah for his resistance to political manipulation, describing him as a “dogged force of resistance and mass conscientisation.” They also criticised the “decadent cultism and political commercialisation” of NANS, noting that the student body has strayed from its roots of moral leadership and anti-authoritarian activism.

Referencing Nigeria’s economic hardship, the group expressed moral outrage at the alleged bribe offer.

“In a country that is deemed the poverty capital of the world… it is certainly morally repulsive to offer ₦100 million to anyone to corrupt their political views,” the group stated.

The group demanded that DSS Director General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi initiate a full investigation into the incident and ensure accountability. It also called on Ajayi and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to publicly guarantee Mr Isah’s safety.

We declare that we will hold the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and the revolting EmiLoKan cult of Mr Tinubu responsible should anything untoward happen to the President of NANS, Mr Isah, or any of his known and unknown supporters,” the group warned.
