Air Burkina has acquired two new Embraer E170 aircraft, a significant step in modernising and expanding its fleet. The first of the 68-seat jets began revenue service on January 18, operating four routes to and from Ouagadougou, the capital. A second E170 is expected to join the fleet in March 2025 as part of the airline’s plan to enhance efficiency and expand its regional network.

The new E170s are replacing Air Burkina’s ageing MD80 aircraft, offering improved fuel efficiency and a more appropriate size for the carrier’s operations. With a range of 3,892 kilometres, the E-Jets are well-suited for Air Burkina’s nine West African destinations, including Dakar Senegal, approximately 1,600 kilometres from Ouagadougou. The E170s’ capabilities ensure they can comfortably handle routes such as the three-hour journey to Dakar.

These aircraft will lower operating costs and allow Air Burkina to refine its network strategy, providing enhanced connectivity and a more sustainable travel option across the region.

It will be recalled that Burkina Faso is a member of the Confederation of Sahel States, CSS, that recently announced plans to establish a Regional Investment Bank. This decision was taken during a ministerial meeting of the AES held in Bamako on January 16, 2025.

Other key decisions from the session include launching transformative infrastructure projects across member states. The meeting was attended by ministers from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, following preparatory discussions held by regional experts on January 14 and 15.
