Abia State civil servants will start receiving a new minimum wage of N70,000 in October 2024, according to an announcement by the state government.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti on Monday.
The N70,000 minimum wage was introduced by the federal government two days after recent nationwide protests against rising inflation and economic hardship. Kanu said the state government is committed to the new minimum wage and assured that payments would begin within the next few days. He also indicated that the governor was open to paying above the national minimum wage if possible.
