Traoré Launches “Sovereignty League” Days After Threatening to Seize Control of Football Federation

19

Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has launched a new national football championship called the “Sovereignty League,” just days after threatening to take over the country’s football federation following a humiliating 7-0 defeat to Argentina.

The tournament will feature 20 teams representing all regions of Burkina Faso, a move the presidency says is aimed at expanding high-level football beyond major cities and creating opportunities for young people across the country. Players selected to take part are being promised a monthly salary of about $300, in addition to other benefits. According to the presidency, the league should create a thousand jobs.

Traoré has framed the initiative as part of his broader push to transform football into a tool for nation-building, professionalising the domestic league and investing in the future of young Burkinabè. The announcement follows his televised address on October 5, in which he declared that his government would intervene directly in the Burkinabè Football Federation, saying he was prepared to accept any consequences, including a possible suspension by FIFA.

FIFA regulations strictly prohibit government interference in the affairs of national football associations. Any direct state intervention in the running or appointments of a member federation can lead to the suspension of the country’s national teams and clubs from all international competitions.

Reports indicate that regional governors will play a central role in organising the new league. However, analysts say it is not clear how this will fit with the Burkinabè Football Federation, which benefits from a special status protected by FIFA rules. The launch of a parallel national championship organised by regional governors, rather than the federation, raises questions about whether the league will be recognised by the sport’s governing bodies.

The controversy began after Burkina Faso’s senior national team travelled to Buenos Aires for a friendly against Argentina on October 3. The squad was decimated after several key players were denied entry into Argentina over visa issues, forcing the federation to call up under-23 players at the last minute to avoid the match being cancelled. The hastily assembled team was then thrashed 7-0 by the world champions.

Traoré’s threat to intervene in the federation, and now the launch of a state-backed league, has deepened concerns that Burkina Faso could face international isolation in football. The country currently sits 62nd in the FIFA world rankings. A suspension would rob a generation of Burkinabè players of the chance to compete on the international stage.

The Burkinabè Football Federation has not yet issued a formal response to the launch of the Sovereignty League or to Traoré’s threat to take it over. FIFA has also not commented publicly on the situation. For now, the league is being presented as a development initiative. But the question of whether it will be allowed to operate alongside the federation, or whether it will trigger a ban that isolates Burkinabè football from the rest of the world, remains unanswered.
