NiMet Alerts Nigerians to Thunderstorms and Dangerous Winds

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a fresh weather alert warning of thunderstorms and strong winds expected across several parts of the country.

According to the agency’s forecast, a mix of sunshine, cloud cover and thunderstorms will affect different regions, with southern and central states likely to experience the most significant weather activity. NiMet said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers and Cross River states, particularly later in the day.

In the North Central region, including areas such as the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi and Nasarawa states, the agency predicted isolated thunderstorms with light to moderate rain during the forecast period. Northern states are expected to remain largely sunny, although some areas may still experience brief weather disturbances.

NiMet warned that strong winds are likely to precede thunderstorms in affected areas, posing potential risks to lives and property. The agency advised residents to take precautions, including securing loose objects that could be displaced by wind and avoiding outdoor exposure during heavy rainfall.

The agency also cautioned against driving during intense downpours due to reduced visibility and slippery road conditions. Residents were urged to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or debris.

Despite the expected rainfall in some regions, temperatures across the country are projected to remain high, contributing to thermal discomfort. NiMet advised Nigerians to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and ensure proper ventilation, especially during peak daytime heat.

Airline operators were also advised to obtain location-specific weather reports from the agency to support safe flight planning and operations.

The warning comes as Nigeria transitions from the dry season into the rainy season, a period often marked by unstable weather patterns including sudden storms and fluctuating temperatures.

NiMet continues to urge the public to monitor official weather updates and take necessary safety measures as conditions evolve across the country.
