Mali has deepened its partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). On Friday, July 18, His Excellency Mr. Abdoulaye Diop, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held a high-level meeting with Ms. Sylvia Ekra, IOM Regional Director, who was visiting Mali for the forum.

During the meeting, both officials emphasised the importance of updating existing cooperation protocols between Mali and the IOM. Discussions also focused on strengthening regional dialogue on migration, in order to better address shared challenges and harness opportunities.

According to the ministry’s statement, particular attention was given to aligning IOM’s strategic implementation with the growing role of the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS), which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Another key issue raised was the pressing need to secure sustainable funding for IOM operations in the current global context. Both sides acknowledged that robust financial support is crucial for effectively managing migration flows and supporting affected communities.

Diop expressed appreciation for IOM’s continued support of Malian authorities on migration-related issues and praised the organisation’s meaningful contribution to the success of the International Diaspora Forum.
