Algeria’s Sonelgaz Donates 40 MW Power Plant to Niger to Boost Energy Cooperation

Algerian group, Sonelgaz, has announced the donation of the 40-megawatt power plant to Niger. The project, unveiled on Wednesday, is part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

The donation follows a memorandum of understanding signed in Niamey between Sonelgaz and Niger’s national electricity provider, Nigelec. This agreement aims to improve Niger’s power supply while fostering deeper collaboration in the energy sector.

According to Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal, the power plant donation is a presidential initiative from Algeria intended to help Niger address its ongoing electricity shortages.

Beyond the power plant, the agreement also includes support for the expansion of Niger’s electricity transmission and distribution networks, as well as training programs, particularly in renewable energy.

Recall that in January, Niger announced plans to build a new refinery and a petrochemical complex with a minimum capacity of 100,000 barrels per day in Dosso. This initiative comes as Niger strengthens its cooperation with Algeria in the oil sector following high-level meetings held in Niamey.

Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Sahabi Oumarou, chaired two meetings with Algerian delegations to enhance bilateral collaboration in petroleum industry development.
