Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo has won the parliamentary seat for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, marking a significant victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.
Dumelo secured 40,561 votes to defeat incumbent Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who polled 27,377 votes. This win comes after his narrow loss to Alhassan in 2020 when he first contested for the seat.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, one of Accra’s most affluent areas, has traditionally been a stronghold of the NPP. Dumelo’s victory signals a rare shift in voter preference in this key constituency, which includes neighbourhoods such as East Legon, Airport Residential Area, and Dzorwulu. The constituency, established in 1992, is surrounded by Ayawaso North, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso Central, and Okaikoi North.
Ghana’s general elections, held on Saturday, also included voting for the presidency and other parliamentary seats. It also saw John Mahama emerge as the President-elect for Ghana under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
