Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has extended his congratulations to president-elect John Dramani Mahama on his decisive victory in Ghana’s presidential election held on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Traoré’s statement celebrated Mahama’s return to power and also hinted at a potential reset in Ghana-Burkina relations amid the ongoing rift between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

In a statement issued on Sunday, Traoré expressed optimism that Mahama’s leadership would enhance the historic ties between the two neighbouring countries.

I express the hope that his mandate at the head of the sister Republic of Ghana will see the strengthening of the age-old relations of good neighbourliness between our two countries and that together we will build a stronger and better integrated sub-regional space for the happiness of our peoples,” Traoré remarked.

Mahama had previously served as president from 2012 to 2017. His victory would mark a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape, ending the NPP’s eight-year rule.
