Traoré Uncovers Massive Embezzlement Scandal in Humanitarian Ministry

President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, announced the discovery of a “network of criminals” within Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Humanitarian Action, revealing extensive embezzlement of funds intended for critical humanitarian aid.

Announcing the discovery on Monday, November 4, 2024, Traoré condemned the theft of billions of CFA francs during a year marked by pressing needs for displaced and impoverished citizens.

“People have allowed themselves to embezzle billions in 2024,” the President declared, stressing the shocking misuse of resources meant to support the nation’s most vulnerable populations.

Initial findings led investigators to seize luxury vehicles and numerous high-value goods, with agents from the National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (CONASUR) among those detained.

Embezzling billions, especially at the Ministry of Humanitarian Action in this context, is unacceptable. (…) Hundreds of millions embezzled, food that should have gone to the benefit of the most deprived, to the benefit of these internally displaced persons, he stated.

Traoré expressed his outrage, stating that the embezzled funds included essential food supplies to benefit internally displaced persons. He vowed to root out corruption across public administration, urging the Commission for the Settlement of Dysfunctions to intensify efforts to uncover others exploiting public funds.

There are still many people who try to embezzle public funds. We are not going to pity these individuals, he insisted.
