Kebbi Govt to Go After Guardians Embezzling Donated Funds for Orphans, Constitutes Probe Committee

Kebbi State Government has vowed to take swift action against guardians found to have fraudulently removed money meant for orphans, following the disbursement of N2.1 billion by the World Muslim League.

The funds, intended to support 1,849 orphans in the state, were transferred through bank channels for their upkeep.

However, some guardians entrusted with managing the money have reportedly been involved in fraudulent practices, shortchanging the orphans under their care.

Governor Nasir Idris has directed the immediate recovery of the misappropriated funds and their return to the rightful beneficiaries.

Briefing reporters in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sani-Aliyu, revealed that the governor has shown great compassion for the affected orphans and is determined to ensure justice.

To that end, a committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and recover the funds. “We are committed to thorough investigation and recovery of the funds,” Sani-Aliyu said.

“We have already contacted the banks that disbursed the money, and they informed us that the fraudulent acts were carried out using Point of Sale (POS) terminals, not conventional banking methods.”

The commissioner issued a stern warning to any banks involved in the unauthorised withdrawal of the funds, stating that the government would formally lodge complaints with the headquarters of any implicated institutions.

Sani-Aliyu further assured that the current administration would not allow unscrupulous individuals to exploit orphans under their care.

The Recovery Committee, headed by the commissioner himself, includes two other commissioners, two special advisers, and two permanent secretaries.
