Niger Bans Cereal Exports

The President of Niger has banned exporting cereals such as rice, millet, sorghum, cowpea, and corn to ensure enough supply of these products in local markets to keep prices affordable.

This decision was made public on Wednesday via a statement from the Government’s General Secretariat.

However, the ban does not apply to exports to Mali and Burkina Faso, both members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

The President of the CNSP made this decision to protect the domestic supply and ensure consumer goods remain affordable. The ban does not apply to exports to AES member states, specifically Mali and Burkina Faso, the statement read.

It also said that the government is working on measures to ensure farmers receive fair crop prices. Officials, including the Minister of Commerce and regional authorities, have been instructed to comply with this new rule strictly.

It added that any ban violation would confiscate the goods, which will be handed over to the National Office for Food Products (OPVN). Offenders may also face administrative or criminal penalties.
