Madagascar To Receive Remains of Traditional Leader Slain By France

France has commenced implementation of plans to return human remains of Madagascan anti-colonialism heroes killed in the late 19th century.

They include the skull of King Toera, beheaded by French troops in 1897 for having resisted the invasion of his kingdom.

The reparation follows series of requests by the government of Madagascar and agitations by indigenous Malagasy people of the country.

The ministers of culture of France and Madagascar on Thursday set up a joint committee to facilitate the restitution of human remains from Madagascar and held in France.

Madagascar’s Minister of Culture, Volamiranty Donna Mara and his French counterpart, Rachida Dati both pledged their commitment to the restitution describing it as a “historic moment” for both countries.

Mara noted that the remains are “of crucial importance” to the Malagasy people.
