Tunisian Presidential Candidate Zammel Sentenced to Prison for Certificate Forgery

Tunisian presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel has been sentenced to six months in prison for using fraudulent certificates. This is his second sentence in a week, just days before Tunisia’s elections are set to hold on October 6.

The Criminal Chamber of the Jendouba Court of First Instance handed down the sentence, as reported by Tunisia’s TAP news agency on Wednesday. Zammel was accused of deliberately using a fraudulent certificate. Last week, he also received a 20-month prison sentence for falsifying endorsement documents required for his presidential candidacy.

Zammel was initially arrested on September 2 for falsifying signatures needed for his candidacy. He was released on September 6 but was quickly rearrested over similar accusations. His lawyer, Abdessattar Massoudi, dismissed the sentence as an attempt to weaken Zammel’s chances in the upcoming election. He vowed to contest the court’s decisions.
