Junior D’Tigress Bounce Back with Quarterfinal Victory Over Egypt, Advances to FIBA U-18 Women’s Afrobasket Semifinals

602

Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have reignited their campaign in the 2024 FIBA U-18 Women’s Afrobasket with a solid 66-51 victory over Egypt in the quarterfinals after two defeats earlier in the group phase.

The team showed resilience after two defeats, rallying behind an outstanding performance from Abigail Isaac, who was named the game’s MVP.

Isaac delivered a powerful double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while adding two assists to her name.

Her all-around effort proved pivotal in breaking Egypt’s defence, and her leadership on the court inspired her teammates to stay focused despite their earlier setbacks.

The game saw Nigeria dominate the floor after an intense first half, where both teams traded points. However, The Junior D’Tigress broke away in the second half, gaining a comfortable lead they maintained until the final buzzer. With Isaac leading the charge, Nigeria’s defence stepped up to limit Egypt’s scoring opportunities, making it difficult for their opponents to recover.

This victory was a remarkable turnaround for the Nigerian side, which had struggled during the group stage. While they managed a huge win against Zimbabwe, they stumbled in critical matches, losing to Uganda. However, their quarterfinal win brings them closer to a coveted spot at the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup next year.

Now in the semifinals, the Junior D’Tigress face a crucial challenge. They must win their next two games to secure a FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup spot.

With Isaac in top form and the team finding their rhythm again, the Nigerian squad is poised to continue their momentum as they aim for ultimate glory.
