Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo.

The match, which took place in the early hours of Monday, was a tense affair, but the Nigerian side emerged victorious with a late goal by forward Flourish Sabastine.

The first half saw both teams locked in a tight battle, with neither side able to create clear scoring opportunities.

However, the Falconets came out with renewed energy in the second half, pressing the South Koreans looking for a breakthrough.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 86th minute when Sabastine’s attempted cross turned into an unexpected goal.

The ball sailed over the head of South Korean goalkeeper Woo Seo-Bin, giving Nigeria the lead and ultimately securing all three points.

This victory places Nigeria alongside Germany at the top of Group D. The Falconets will face a crucial test on Wednesday when they take on the three-time World Cup champions, Germany.

A win in that match could guarantee their progression to the knockout stages of the tournament.
