Netflix has released the first look at its latest Yoruba-language epic, “Lisabi: The Uprising,” as part of its continued investment in Nigerian storytelling. The film brings to life the legendary tale of an 18th-century Egba farmer who leads a historic rebellion against the Oyo Empire, securing independence for his people after centuries of oppression.

The two-part film “Lisabi: The Uprising” and “Lisabi: A Legend is Born” are set to be released in September 27, 2024, and January 2025, respectively and are executive-produced by Nigerian actor Adedimeji Lateef and directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, are a significant addition to Netflix’s growing collection of big-budget African epics.

This acquisition follows Netflix’s recent trend of supporting Indigenous Nigerian films, joining the ranks of other prominent Yoruba-language productions like Femi Adebayo’s “Jagun Jagun,” Kunle Afolayan’s “Anikulapo” series, and “House of Ga’a” by Bolanle Austen-Peters.

With “Lisabi: The Uprising” and its sequel, “Lisabi: A Legend is Born,” Netflix continues demonstrating its dedication to amplifying Nigerian voices. This trend is expected to foster new opportunities for local creators and talent while introducing Nigerian history and culture to a global audience.
