The British Army has begun the recruitment of Nigerians and citizens of other Commonwealth countries. The application started Monday and is expected to run for a week.

According to the British Army, the available roles open for applications are musicians, Royal electricians, mechanical engineers, Royal engineers technician and tradesman roles, and paratroopers.

“Applications MUST be linked to the Recruit Bounty Referral Scheme,” the British Army wrote on its website. “Any applications submitted outside the Recruitment Bounty Scheme will be rejected, except those applying as a musician.”

The Recruit Bounty Scheme is designed to reward serving soldiers in the British Army for encouraging their family or friends to join the army. “A cash reward is paid for each new soldier that begins training that they have referred,” the British Army wrote.

The above means that for Nigerian applicants or citizens of other Commonwealth countries to be eligible, they must be referred by someone currently serving in the British Army through the same scheme.

The website also noted that sickle cell is not a barrier for anyone who wants to apply for any of the available roles in the army. Still, the army said applicants would be assessed to see if they are at “higher risk of Sickle Cell Trait.”
