A fire broke out at the Kaura Modern Market in Abuja on Friday night, destroying over 40 shops.
According to reports, the fire was caused by an electrical spark and started around 11 p.m. It continued until about 2 a.m. on Saturday before firefighters from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service managed to put it out.
The FCT Fire Service spokesman, M.T. Ibrahim, said food, generators, refrigerators, fruits, electrical appliances, and household goods were lost in the fire. He said the fire began due to an electrical spark from a power switch in one of the shops. The presence of a generator with petrol in the shop worsened the situation.
This incident adds to several fire outbreaks that have razed down shops, facilities, and buildings and destroyed properties both within Abuja and other states as well.
