Sports Minister Advocates Federations’ Constitution Review After Olympics Disappointment

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has stated that there must be an overhauling of constitution governing sporting federations in Nigeria.

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has stated that there must be an overhauling of constitution governing sporting federations in Nigeria.

This is in reaction to Team Nigeria’s performance at the just-concluded 2024 Paris Olympics, where none made podium finishes.

Speaking from Paris, Senator Enoh expressed disappointment over the results, stating, “We did everything as a ministry to prepare the athletes adequately and provide them with every financial support, but unfortunately, the performance has not produced any podium finish.”

The minister pointed out that it had done its best towards the athletes in terms of advance payments and extension of training facilities beyond what was allocated in the budget.

”We paid them in advance and fulfilled all our responsibilities as a ministry. We even expanded their training facilities beyond what was initially budgeted.”

Notwithstanding these efforts to support the contingent, failure at the Olympics has led to a call for action to ensure such a “disaster” does not recur.

“As we go back home, we must do everything to ensure the Paris disaster is not witnessed again, and if this will entail the review of how people are elected to lead our sporting federations, it will be done,” Enoh noted.

“I am aware that the Sports Federations Elections in Nigeria are even tougher than our National Elections and you will begin to ask yourself why is it so,” he added.
