Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has surged past Disney’s “Frozen II” to claim the title of the highest-grossing animated film in history at the global box office, amassing an impressive $1.5 billion. By the close of Tuesday, the film’s worldwide earnings reached $1.462 billion, with a domestic gross of $601 million and an international take of $861.8 million.

Previously, Disney Animation’s “Frozen II,” released in 2019, held the record for $1.451 billion. “Inside Out 2” now leads the all-time animated film rankings, surpassing other blockbusters such as Illumination and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which earned $1.361 billion, the original “Frozen” with $1.274 billion, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” at $1.242 billion, and Illumination’s “Minions” with $1.157 billion. Other notable mentions include “Toy Story 4” ($1.072 billion), “Despicable Me 3” ($1.032 billion), and “Finding Dory” ($1 billion).

In addition to overtaking “Frozen II,” “Inside Out 2” also surpassed the recent success of “Barbie,”which garnered $1.446 billion. This achievement marks “Inside Out 2” as the most significant film release since “Barbie” made its theatrical debut a year ago.

The sequel continues the story of Riley, a girl from Minnesota whose internal world is driven by personified emotions – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. These emotions reside in Headquarters, Riley’s conscious mind, and are crucial in shaping her actions and memories. With Riley as a teenager now, a new array of emotions set in – Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment.
