Two Sierra Leonean women, Aminata Mansaré and Jeannette Kourouma, have been arrested in Kouremalé for possessing 10 kilograms of cocaine.

They were presented to the local press on Friday on the premises of the Siguiri courthouse in the presence of the defence and security forces and the public prosecutor.

The women were accused of international cocaine trafficking. When questioned, Jeannette, one of the accused, said:

“We were leaving Sierra Leone for Mali via Guinea to reach Ghana. At the border of Kourémalé, the gendarmes (police officers) stopped us. There were two of us sitting in the vehicle, sitting on a seat for three people to be free. We have cocaine, and it was when we were making the currency that we were arrested,” she explained.

According to the prosecutor at the Court of First Instance of Siguiri, the seizure was made possible by the vigilance of the defence and security forces stationed at the Guinean-Malian border in Kouremalé, over 60 kilometres from Siguiri’s city centre.

“They were arrested with 10 packets of cocaine from Sierra Leone. It was thanks to the vigilance of a police officer, who noticed their suspicious behaviour and ordered a search, that this drug was discovered. Each packet weighs one kilogram,” the prosecutor said.

The two alleged traffickers were handed over to the public prosecutor for further investigations.
