United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has conceded defeat after losing majority seats to the Labour Party. The defeat marks the end of the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule in the UK.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, will be the next Prime Minister after securing the 326 seats required for a majority in the House of Commons. Labour will form the next government with a majority of at least 100 seats.

The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory, Sunak conceded before the last votes were counted.

While addressing a crowd of supporters, Sir Keir said the UK was experiencing a “sunlight of hope” and “change begins now”.

“We did it, you campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it, and now it has arrived; change begins now.

The sunlight of hope, pale at first but getting stronger through the day. Shining once again on a country with an opportunity after 14 years to get its future back, he said excitedly.

With more than 635 out of 650 seats declared, several Tory cabinet ministers lost seats to Labour. Sunak took full responsibility for the party’s defeat.

He said: “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight… and I take responsibility for the loss. To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight… I am sorry.”

Sunak is expected to announce his resignation as Conservative Party leader on Friday morning, according to British media
