Ligue 1 side Marseille has appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach on a three-year contract. The former Brighton boss was officially confirmed as the new coach on Saturday, following an earlier announcement from the club about an “agreement in principle.”

Marseille are delighted to announce the signing of the Italian coach for the next three seasons,” read the statement on the club’s website.

De Zerbi, 45, replaces Jean-Louis Gasset, taking over the reins of the 1993 Champions League winners.

Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, De Zerbi said,

I had a powerful desire to join the club. The history and prestige that surround Marseille, the passion and zeal of its supporters, and the seriousness and enthusiasm shown to me were all decisive factors. I can’t wait to sit on the bench at the Velodrome, this time as OM coach, and help the club regain the position that Marseille deserves.

American owner Frank McCourt welcomed De Zerbi’s arrival, stating, “Roberto understands the solidity of the sporting project that (president) Pablo (Longoria) is building, and I’m convinced that his passion and commitment to the club’s future will be invaluable.”

De Zerbi’s appointment is a significant achievement for Marseille, as they finished eighth in the Ligue 1 table and will miss out on European football next season.

The former AC Milan and Napoli midfielder was previously linked with a move to Chelsea before Enzo Maresca was appointed their new boss.

During his tenure at Brighton, De Zerbi led the team to an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United and secured Europa League qualification for the first time.

De Zerbi joined Brighton in 2022 and left the Premier League club by mutual consent after their final game in May 2024.
