Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have experienced a significant drop in the latest FIFA rankings, released on Thursday.

The team’s points fell from 1520.27 to 1498.93, causing them to plummet eight places to 38th position globally.

This decline also saw Nigeria drop to the fifth-best team on the African continent.

The top spots in the global rankings remain unchanged, with Argentina holding onto the number one position, followed by France and Belgium in second and third places respectively.

Brazil made a notable advancement past England to secure fourth place.

In Africa, Morocco and Senegal retained their status as the top teams. Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire climbed to third and fourth places respectively, reflecting their recent strong performances.

Nigeria’s slip in the rankings comes as no surprise following two disappointing international matches.

The Super Eagles first drew 1-1 against South Africa in a World Cup qualifying match held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. This was followed by a shocking 2-1 defeat to Benin just days later.

Recall West Africa Weekly earlier reported that Finidi George resigned from his role as the Head Coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. This comes amidst Nigeria’s challenging quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, following the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Benin, leaving them winless after four qualifying matches.
