UN Experts Call for Global Recognition of Palestinian State

202

A group of United Nations experts on Monday called for all countries to recognise a Palestinian state to ensure peace in the Middle East.

This appeal followed the official recognition of a Palestinian state by Spain, Ireland, and Norway, actions that angered Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

The UN experts, including the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestinian territories, stressedthat recognition of a Palestinian state acknowledges the rights of Palestinians and their pursuit of freedom and independence.

This is a pre-condition for lasting peace in Palestine and the entire Middle East – beginning with the immediate declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza and no further military incursions into Rafah, the UN experts said.

They also stressed that a two-state solution remains the only internationally agreed path to peace and security for both Palestine and Israel.

Spain, Ireland, and Norway have stated that their recognition of a Palestinian state aims to accelerate efforts to secure a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. They hope their decision will encourage other European Union countries to do the same. However, Denmark’s parliament recently rejected a proposal to recognise a Palestinian state.

Israel has consistently condemned such moves, arguing that they support Hamas, the militant group responsible for the deadly attack on Israel on October 7, which led to the current offensive in Gaza.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, the conflict has resulted in over 36,000 Palestinian deaths. On the other hand, Israel reported that the October 7 attack killed 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 hostages being taken.
