Lagos Ends 25% Discount on Public Transport Fare

64

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced that the 25% discount on fares for regulated public buses, ferries, and train services will end on Sunday, June 2, 2024. Starting Monday, June 3, fares will revert to their original rates.

This discount was initially introduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on February 23, 2024, to mitigate the financial impact of the fuel subsidy removal on Lagos residents. The fare reduction was part of broader measures implemented between August 2023 and February 2024, which included temporary fare discounts of up to 50% on all state-regulated transport services.

In response to the subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in May 2023, which led to increased transport costs nationwide, Lagos State implemented these discounts to alleviate the economic burden on its residents. Despite the initial cessation of the 50% discount in November 2023 due to rising diesel prices, continued public pressure led to reinstating a 25% discount in January 2024.

However, as of June 3, 2024, all regulated public transport fares will return to 100% of their original rates. Lagosians were advised to prepare for this adjustment in public transportation costs.
