Some residents of Gaya Local Government Area in Kano State earlier today, protested the dissolution of their emirate by the Abba Yusuf-led government.

Recall that last week, the Kano State House of Assembly dissolved the five emirate councils established by the former governor, Umar Ganduje.

Following the passage of the Emirate Council Amendment Bill, Governor Yusuf ordered the emirs of Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye to vacate their palaces within 48 hours. Subsequently, he reinstated and turbaned the former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was dethroned by Ganduje in 2020.

Expressing their displeasure over the ongoing tussles, the protesters held placards with various inscriptions and chanted anti-government slogans while calling on the government not to impose its will on the people.

Meanwhile, other protesters also marched through a State road near the Kano State Government House in solidarity with the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.

They held a special prayer session in front of the second Emir’s Palace in Nasarawa to seek divine intervention on the Emirate tussle in the state.

However, the former Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, has accepted his removal, describing it as an act of God.

In an interview today with BBC Hausa, the former emir revealed that he had no plans to challenge the government’s action.

He added that he bore no grudges against anyone and was ready to serve in any capacity if given the opportunity.

“Nobody will feel happy about this development, but it is Allah who made you, and everything has time.

“Allah has predestined that this would happen long before we were born; therefore, we do not hold a grudge against anybody. It is the will of Allah, and we have accepted it wholeheartedly,” he said.

With the recent developments, the atmosphere in the state has been a mix of joy and sadness, with different groups protesting against government action.
