West Africa Weekly’s Top 10 Standout Looks at the 2024 Met Gala

1.4k

The curtains have closed on the red carpet of the 2024 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, marking the end of fashion’s grandest night. This year’s showcase, titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” delves into technology’s transformative role in revitalising ageing and delicate garments.

Guests gracefully ascended the museum’s iconic steps, adorned in attire inspired by the event’s thematic directive, “The Garden of Time.” This motif draws inspiration from a tale by J.G. Ballard, where a count employs a rose from his garden to manipulate time, fending off an encroaching mob until all blooms are spent.

The juxtaposition of dystopian elements from the story and the exhibit’s focus on blending antiquity with innovation set the stage for a diverse array of fashion statements, ranging from florals to avant-garde tech-inspired ensembles, with occasional nods to the tale of Sleeping Beauty.

The Met Gala, renowned for its enigmatic guest list, remains shrouded in secrecy regarding attendees. However, this year’s co-chairs—Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya—joined forces with Vogue’s illustrious Anna Wintour to orchestrate the affair in support of the Metropolitan Museum’s esteemed Costume Institute.
