Abdoulaye Bathily, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), has resigned, citing significant challenges in his mediation efforts.

Bathily, who took up the role in September 2022, expressed his decision on Tuesday, lamenting that his attempts to foster dialogue and address concerns were met with “stubborn resistance, unreasonable expectations, and indifference to the interests of the Libyan people.”

The resignation of Bathily, a seasoned diplomat, has raised concerns about the trajectory of UN mediation efforts in Libya and the ongoing quest for political stability in the conflict-ridden nation.

In his statement, Bathily underscored the crucial need for Libyan leaders to reach a political settlement through negotiations and compromise. He emphasised the importance of prioritising the aspirations of the 2.8 million registered Libyan voters over the narrow interests of a select few.

The timing of Bathily’s formal resignation remains unspecified, leaving uncertainties about the transition process and potential successors to lead UNSMIL.

With Bathily’s departure, questions arose regarding the continuity of UNSMIL’s leadership and the future direction of diplomatic initiatives to resolve the crisis in Libya.

The United Nations has been actively involved in mediating the conflict in Libya, which has been plagued by instability and violence since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

UNSMIL is crucial in facilitating dialogue between rival factions and supporting efforts to establish a sustainable peace process.

Bathily’s resignation comes at a critical juncture for Libya, with various factions vying for power and influence amid a fragile political landscape.
