Ronaldo suspended, fined for provocative gesture

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr captain, for one game.

The suspension came as a consequence of a provocative gesture made by Ronaldo during a recent match, which was deemed a violation of regulations prohibiting the provocation of the public during gameplay.

The SAFF also levied a fine of 30,000 riyals ($8,000) against the renowned footballer. Notably, the decision is final and cannot be appealed.

The incident that sparked the disciplinary action occurred during Al-Nassr’s victory over Al-Shabab, where Ronaldo was captured on video making repeated thrusting gestures towards his groin.

This act was reportedly in response to taunts from the crowd, who were chanting the name of Ronaldo’s long-standing rival, Lionel Messi.

While Ronaldo defended his actions, stating that the gesture symbolised “strength and victory” rather than any offence, the Saudi authorities said it breached their regulations.

Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr in January 2023, becoming the first major star to join the burgeoning football scene in the kingdom.

Saudi’s landscape has witnessed an influx of prominent international players, with Karim Benzema, Neymar, and Sadio Mane opting for lucrative contracts in the Saudi Pro League.

This trend aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to elevate its global sporting presence, culminating in the nation’s hosting of the 2034 World Cup.
