Jose Mourinho has praised how the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been used so far in the competition. Mourinho, known for his outspoken opinions, admired the fairness and transparency demonstrated by AFCON’s VAR procedures, suggesting they set an example for European football to follow.

“I have watched AFCON more than European football,” stated Mourinho. “They are simply teaching us to be honest.”

Mourinho highlighted the equitable application of VAR in AFCON matches, emphasising its role in ensuring fairness for all teams involved. He commended the tournament’s approach, prioritising integrity over favouritism towards marquee clubs or financial interests.

“In AFCON, VAR is used exactly how it should be,” Mourinho remarked. “They do not use it to help the money magnet or famous teams.”

The former Manchester United and Chelsea manager pointed out that AFCON’s VAR protocol encouraged participation from all teams and empowered players and coaches to alert officials to potential missed incidents on the field.

“This is why you saw the best out of every team because they know VAR is not hired behind the scenes but is for everyone.”

Mourinho further underscored the contrast between AFCON and European football, citing instances where attempts to engage referees in VAR reviews often led to disciplinary actions rather than clarifying contentious decisions.

“In Europe, if I, as a coach or a player, plead with a ref to go check something, it is a red card for doing that,” he explained.

Mourinho advocated for European football authorities to consider relocating the headquarters for VAR to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), highlighting AFCON’s approach as a blueprint for fair play and sportsmanship.

“The headquarters for VAR needs to be in CAF,” Mourinho declared.
