Cholera is on the loose in Zambia. Within the past 24 hours, 400 new cases with 18 deaths have been reported by the Zambian Health Ministry. With over 7,800 cases being reported nationwide since last October, churches across Zambia have received an order to limit worship sessions to no further than two hours.

This directive was issued by Ndiwa Mutelo, a high-ranking official who oversees religious matters in the country.

Also, prohibiting the sales of perishable goods and ready-to-eat food within church arenas by vendors, this directive aims to curb the risk of disease transmission. It strongly encouraged worshippers to avoid handshakes and hugs.

Mr Mutelo, in an official statement, stressed the importance of upholding hygiene in worship centres.

To this effect, churches are now expected to provide safe drinking water, establish designated handwashing stations and offer alcoholic-based hand sanitiser to their attendees.

With the interest of the people at heart, these proactive measures lay emphasis on the collective responsibility of religious institutions in safeguarding public health.
