ECOWAS Court Orders Release of Niger Deposed President

869

The ECOWAS Court in Abuja has ordered the immediate release of the former president of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, on Friday, 15th December 2023. The court described his continued detention as illegal and unjust and ordered his immediate and unconditional release.

President Bazoum was deposed by a military coup on July 26, 2023, and has remained in detention since then. At the time, Colonel Amadou Abdramane disclosed that he and his colleagues decided to end the regime due to the deteriorating security situation and bad governance. Most Nigeriens presumed Bazoum to be the puppet of the West, particularly the French government, and his removal was viewed as a welcome development.
