Russia Declares State Of Emergency In Two Regions Affected By Forest Fires

320

Russia has declared a state of emergency in two regions due to spreading forest fires amid intense heat.

The two regions are Tuva and Sakha.

In the Siberian region of Tuva, the Governor, Vladislav Khovalyg, announced that 23 forest fires are burning across 1,700 hectares, mainly in inaccessible mountain areas.

Intense heat, strong winds, and dry thunderstorms fuel the fires.

Despite weather forecasters’ predictions that the heat will subside in the next few days, Governor Knovalyg said they “cannot rely on the weather.”

July promises to be the most difficult month regarding the fire situation. And we have to fight for every hectare of forest, Governor Khovalyg posted on Telegram.

In the Far East region of Sakha (also called Yakutia), a federal state of emergency has also been declared. The Russian Ministry of Emergencies reported 107 wildfires burning over 331,000 hectares. The ministry further said that drones are being used to monitor the situation.
