The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) has successfully repelled a terrorist attack in Diangassagou on Wednesday, with ground and air forces mounting a decisive response that culminated in the destruction of a retreating column of terrorists 15 kilometres south of the locality.

According to a statement released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces on January 9, the attack occurred around 5:30 PM and was met with swift and coordinated action by FAMa units.

The operation resulted in the neutralisation of 14 terrorists, with nine motorcycles and various war materials recovered during the engagement.

The statement emphasised the critical role of air support in the operation. Strikes targeted a retreating group of terrorists south of Diangassagou, inflicting significant losses and preventing further regrouping or escape.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces commends the promptness and professionalism of the units involved.

Diangassagou, located in the Mopti region, has been a hotspot for terrorist activity in recent years. However, the Malian Armed Forces have stepped up their operations to counter these threats, bolstered by improved coordination between ground and air units.

In December last year, FAMa captured Ahmad Ag Ditta, a senior leader of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), during an operation in the Ménaka region in eastern Mali.

The army described the operation as precise and professional, resulting in the deaths of several EIGS fighters.

Ditta is accused of orchestrating attacks against civilians and the Malian army, as well as ordering multiple assaults on FAMa forces. During the operation, military equipment including improvised explosive devices, were seized. The army also reported that two EIGS fighters surrendered.
