Niger: Niamey Police Seize Over 51,000 Shisha Products, Arrest Traders in Crackdown on Illegal Sale

23

The national police in Niamey have seized over 51,000 shisha products, according to Commissioner Zouéra Haousseizé.

Several traders were arrested for violating a local ban on the import, sale, and consumption of shisha or hookah in the Niamey region.

Commissioner Haousseizé highlighted the dangers of shisha use among minors, stating that it negatively affects both their mental and physical health.

The police had previously conducted awareness campaigns before launching raids on public spaces, nightclubs, and other locations where young people were found smoking shisha. The commissioner noted that high-end hookah devices, including expensive white and red metal bottles, were among the items seized.

Commissioner Haousseizé warned that individuals who continue to import or sell shisha would face heavy fines, with the proceeds going to the treasury.

The crackdown follows a July 24, 2024, decree by the governor of Niamey that banned the consumption of shisha and ordered the destruction of related products and accessories to protect future generations from the harmful physical and mental health effects associated with its use.
