Ghana Strike Galamsey

Organised Labour in Ghana has announced a nationwide strike starting on October 10, 2024, to push the government to address the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey”, which they say is causing severe environmental damage.

Joshua Ansah, the spokesperson of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), urged all workers across the country to stay at home until the government responds to their demands.

The decision to embark on the strike follows the government’s failure to take action after the TUC set a deadline of September 30.

The Union had previously warned the government to declare a state of emergency in areas affected by galamsey. It also demanded a halt to all mining activities in forest reserves, the establishment of special courts to expedite the prosecution of galamsey operators, and the deployment of military forces to remove and destroy all mining equipment in the affected areas.

The Union said that the government’s lack of action against the galamsey menace has led to environmental degradation, including the destruction of rivers, farmlands, and forest reserves.
