Cuba Joins South Africa’s ICJ Lawsuit Against Israel Over Gaza

Cuba has officially announced its decision to participate in South Africa's legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel, concerning Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip.

Cuba has officially announced its decision to participate in South Africa’s legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel, concerning Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry released a statement on Friday confirming their involvement, marking a significant development in the international legal response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The statement from the Cuban Foreign Ministry emphasised that the move was primarily aimed at “stopping the atrocities against the Palestinian people as a result of Israel’s disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force.”

Cuba’s participation underscored its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and commitment to addressing what it described as severe human rights violations.

The legal proceedings were initiated by South Africa on December 29, 2023, citing Israel’s alleged violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention in relation to the Palestinians in Gaza.

The South African government has argued that Israel’s military actions in Gaza amount to acts of genocide, warranting intervention by the ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.

Following South Africa’s lead, several other countries, including Chile and Spain, have also joined the lawsuit against Israel.

These countries contend that Israel’s actions constitute grave breaches of international law, necessitating accountability and justice for the Palestinian people.

Cuba’s involvement in the case represents a continuation of its diplomatic and political support for Palestine.

The Cuban government has historically condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza and has called for international efforts to protect Palestinian rights.

The decision to join the ICJ lawsuit is likely to escalate tensions in the international community regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Recall South Africa had petitioned the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to command Israel to cease its military operations in Rafah and ensure humanitarian access to Gaza.
