Kenyan President Defends Cost of Private Jet for U.S. Trip

Kenyan President, Williams Ruto.

Kenyan President William Ruto defended the cost of hiring a private jet for his trip to the United States, stating it was $76,000, contrary to media reports of $1.2 million.

He mentioned that friends offered a cheaper jet after he had considered using Kenya Airways.

Ruto’s four-day visit to the U.S. included a delegation of about 30 people, which sparked criticism in Kenya over expenses. The delegates included musicians, actors, and a comedian. Nonetheless, Ruto maintained that he was a “responsible steward” of public funds.

Amid public criticism for increasing taxes without cutting government expenses, Ruto has advocated for reduced government spending.

The government plans to raise taxes on essential goods in the next financial year to generate an additional $2.3 billion for the budget. This measure by Ruto is being taken, given the country’s debt situation.
