Australia has witnessed widespread protests against the recent surge in violence against women, prompting demands for immediate government action.

Protesters in various cities rallied, demanding that the government recognise gender-based violence as a national emergency and enact stricter legislation to combat it.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the gravity of the situation, labelling it a national crisis and calling for federal and state governments to intensify efforts to tackle its underlying causes.

While addressing a large gathering in Canberra, Albanese emphasised the need for cultural and systemic change, stressing the importance of collective action and a shift in societal attitudes.

Despite calls for a royal commission into gender-based violence, Federal Attorney General Mark Dreyfus’s rejection has sparked controversy.

Recent high-profile cases, such as a tragic stabbing incident in a Sydney shopping centre, have reignited public outrage and highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue.
